Envisioning our Future

Through the leadership of Maine Medical Center, Maine will become the healthiest state in the nation by putting patients and their families first, providing access to affordable care, and delivering superior service and outcomes.

Patients and families often tell me about the wonderful care they receive at Maine Medical Center and the comfort they find coming here, knowing they’ll be treated by the best and most caring group of people in health care.

Maine Medical Center has so much of which to be proud. We have grown and changed to meet the demands and responsibilities placed before us as Maine’s leading academic medical center and tertiary care center. And we will continue to change to meet our state’s health care needs. Throughout our long history we have kept our standards high and avoided complacency.

Part of that rich history and reputation includes such milestones as:

  • Being one of the first hospitals in the nation to perform open heart surgery over 50 years ago,
  • Our nurses achieving and maintaining Magnet Hospital status since 2006,
  • Repeatedly being named one of ‘America’s Best Hospitals,’
  • Not to mention the number of leaders, clinicians, and researchers known nationally, and even world-wide, for excellence in their field.

We must honor the legacy of our past, and must look into the future with the energy and anticipation required to capitalize on the opportunities that lie ahead.

Organizations evolve from good to great based on the ability of their people to constantly change for the better; strive for the next achievement; push for the next improvement; reach for the next accomplishment; fulfill the next great vision.

Recently, the Maine Medical Center Board of Trustees, along with many directors, physicians, patients and other leaders, have defined a clear, compelling and shared vision for the Medical Center and have provided a path for our future. This plan maps the strategic course necessary for us to move from a very good organization to a great organization.

The visual below illustrates how our vision and strategic priorities work in concert with one another, and flow from our mission.

I am personally proud of this plan. It is bold, but realistic; inspirational, yet achievable; and will act as a touchstone for our organization going forward. It includes Maine Medical Center’s commitment and dedication to a culture of continuously meeting and/or exceeding organizational objectives. What it means most for you is an innovative and accountable healthcare resource that promises to put you and your family at the center of all we do.

When you support us financially you become a partner in our vision. We believe that the health of the people of Maine matters. Thank you for believing with us!
