Envisioning our Future
Through the leadership of Maine Medical Center, Maine will become the healthiest state in the nation by putting patients and their families first, providing access to affordable care, and delivering superior service and outcomes.
Patients and families often tell me about the wonderful care they receive at Maine Medical Center and the comfort they find coming here, knowing they’ll be treated by the best and most caring group of people in health care.
Maine Medical Center has so much of which to be proud. We have grown and changed to meet the demands and responsibilities placed before us as Maine’s leading academic medical center and tertiary care center. And we will continue to change to meet our state’s health care needs. Throughout our long history we have kept our standards high and avoided complacency.
Part of that rich history and reputation includes such milestones as:
- Being one of the first hospitals in the nation to perform open heart surgery over 50 years ago,
- Our nurses achieving and maintaining Magnet Hospital status since 2006,
- Repeatedly being named one of ‘America’s Best Hospitals,’
- Not to mention the number of leaders, clinicians, and researchers known nationally, and even world-wide, for excellence in their field.
We must honor the legacy of our past, and must look into the future with the energy and anticipation required to capitalize on the opportunities that lie ahead.
Organizations evolve from good to great based on the ability of their people to constantly change for the better; strive for the next achievement; push for the next improvement; reach for the next accomplishment; fulfill the next great vision.
Recently, the Maine Medical Center Board of Trustees, along with many directors, physicians, patients and other leaders, have defined a clear, compelling and shared vision for the Medical Center and have provided a path for our future. This plan maps the strategic course necessary for us to move from a very good organization to a great organization.
The visual below illustrates how our vision and strategic priorities work in concert with one another, and flow from our mission.
I am personally proud of this plan. It is bold, but realistic; inspirational, yet achievable; and will act as a touchstone for our organization going forward. It includes Maine Medical Center’s commitment and dedication to a culture of continuously meeting and/or exceeding organizational objectives. What it means most for you is an innovative and accountable healthcare resource that promises to put you and your family at the center of all we do.
When you support us financially you become a partner in our vision. We believe that the health of the people of Maine matters. Thank you for believing with us!
Richard W. Petersen, FACHE
President and Chief Executive Officer
Our five strategic priorities are:
Population Health Management
Maine will be the healthiest state in the nation by 2015, as reported by America’s Health Rankings®. Maine Medical Center will assist the state in achieving this goal through its efforts with the population of Cumberland County and will collaborate with other providers to extend the impact statewide. Our strong traditions of academic excellence, premier clinical programs, and the MaineHealth system will bring depth and rigor to population health efforts.
Patients and families will be engaged as partners in health. Their experience throughout the continuum of care will be consistent and exceptional at every point of contact. Patients will feel safe and assured that the care and attention they receive will be of the highest quality.
Positive patient experiences are proven to have implications far beyond satisfaction scores. Exceptional experiences result in: access to appropriate care; optimal clinical care and outcomes; dynamic community relationships; high staff engagement and satisfaction; as well as financial stewardship.
Quality, Cost & Value
Maine Medical Center will deliver the highest value care to our patients and families while assuming accountability for the health needs of our communities.
It will be characterized by:
- Delivering the best care for all patients and families in every venue with seamless transitions.
- Excellence, consistency, and responsible stewardship in all clinical and academic programs.
- A culture of continuous learning where expert teams innovate care delivery informed by data.
Care Models & Services
We will limit the rate of increase in the per capita cost of health care services by ensuring that care is provided in the most appropriate setting. We will evaluate and implement where appropriate emerging models of medical homes and medical neighborhoods.
People & Culture
Maine Medical Center staff, physicians, and volunteers will be a team of highly engaged, talented, and diverse individuals who work collaboratively to support the mission and achieve the vision of the organization. All team members will understand their role and value in the patient experience and will be empowered to make decisions putting our patients and families first. We will value the contributions of each team member and will reward individuals for their performance.
Our organization will be supported by effective leaders who promote a Workplace of Choice. Respect, accountability, values-based and an outcomes-driven environment will be the cornerstone for how we work together. Our culture will embrace change, innovation, and continuous improvement necessary to be a leader in the health care industry.
