Newly Relocated PICU Opens at BBCH

On Thursday, April 7th, 2016, MMC staff and community supporters celebrated the opening of the newly relocated pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital, which provides a high level of intensive care each year to more than 450 critically ill children from Maine and New Hampshire. Over the past 10 years, members of the community raised more than 70 percent of the $3.1 million needed for the project. The PICU is now adjacent to the Inpatient Unit of The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center.

Bean 2 Surgical Expansion

In 2015 we unveiled five much needed operating rooms on the Bramhall Campus as well as a hybrid operating room that will enable MMC to continue to offer specialized procedures which are unavailable in the rest of the state. This project has enhanced capabilities and eased capacity constraints for our Bramhall Campus in Portland, ME.

Addressing Patient Needs

  • Maine Medical Center’s Bramhall Campus operating rooms were running at 94% capacity, limiting ability to respond to unpredicted and emergency patient needs.
  • Prior O.R. facilities were built over 30 years ago making more advanced and modern surgical procedures difficult.
  • The Bean 2 project helped us expand and improve on facilities to provide excellent standards of patient care.

Surgery Suites

5 state of the art operating rooms will were included in the expansion, which are outfitted to meet the needs of some of the most intricate and difficult surgeries performed at MMC including neurosurgery as well as joint and spine.

The Cardiac Hybrid Operating Room provides a specialty space for both minimally-invasive and enhanced surgeries such as the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) and Mitral Valve Repair System (MitraClip) procedures, which is only available within the state of Maine at MMC. Both of these minimally invasive procedures provide
alternatives for some of our sickest patients for whom traditional open heart surgeries are too risky.

KeyBank

The KeyBank of Maine Family Waiting Room

The new family room in the expanded Bean 2 facility, made possible with support from KeyBank of Maine, allows patients and their families to be treated in an aesthetically healing environment that is indicative of the quality of care provided at MMC. Maine Medical Center is proud to have KeyBank of Maine as an important partner in continuing to provide this vital modernization of facilities to help improve service and quality for our community.

Expansion Results

  • The addition of five modern operating rooms
  • The creation of a cardiac hybrid operating room that will enable MMC to continue to offer enhanced services that are unavailable in the rest of the state
  • The addition of perioperative spaces, which will enhance preparation and recovery for our patients
  • The upgrade of MMC’s sterile supply transport capabilities
  • The creation of the Key Bank of Maine Family Waiting Room, which will provide families with a private space in the new surgery space
