The Maddie Kate Fund

Maddie Kate Smart was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) at the age of 20, and survived for just over a year through sheer will, a caring medical team, and strong family and friends. The Maddie Kate Fund was born in the memory of Maddie and her “B Positive” attitude. Her family—like so many others who experience cancer and other intense medical treatments—continues to be incredibly thankful to nurses whose role is so important in minimizing discomfort, providing morale support and communicating what to expect next.

About the Fund

“Maddie and I were talking and she mentioned how the nurses don't get nearly the credit they deserve. She's right. These dedicated professionals, especially on the cancer floor, are super human, doing everything they can to make patients as comfortable as possible.”

Maddie's Birthday

On November 25, 2019 The Maddie Kate Fund formally launched at Maine Medical Center.

It’s only fitting, as it would have been Maddie’s 22nd birthday—a day when she traditionally requested birthday candles on the Thanksgiving Day pumpkin pie.

She may also have requested your help in giving back to the nursing community who did so much for her, her family and so many others.

The Maddie Kate Fund

The Maddie Kate Fund at Maine Medical Center was established to show appreciation for the outstanding care cancer patients and their loved ones receive from our caring and compassionate nursing staff.

Maddie Kate Smart's family created this fund at Maine Med to share their personal story of gratitude, and to give back to nurses in meaningful ways. They hope others with their own special stories will join them in donating to this worthy cause. Every gift will help nurses to continue providing outstanding care to others battling cancer.

Giving

All funds raised are dedicated to a permanent fund for oncology education and leadership development for nurses. The fund's initial goal is to raise $50,000; an ambitious, yet achievable goal with everyone's participation!

The Maddie Kate Fund will be able to provide annual funds for:

  • Continuing education and development of oncology and critical care nurses and clinicians at Maine Medical Center, where Maddie and so many others have received exceptional care.
  • The Maddie Kate Fund Symposium — an annual educational forum at Maine Medical Center focused on the latest oncology treatments and patient care — which will benefit nurses and clinicians, and therefore their patients.
